Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea is one of my favourite books ever. It was written by Los Angeles Times journalist Barbara Demick and published in 2009. Demick part-fictionalised her interviews with refugees from Chongjin and put their stories together to create a heartbreaking portrait of the life of North Koreans. These stories are both moving and disturbing and I was deeply impressed by both Demick’s journalistic skills and her sensibility.
