In the early 80s, after escaping from an Australian prison and fleeing the country on a forged passport Roberts’ character immerses himself in Bombay life. Setting up a free clinic for the poor in the city slums he makes friends at every step of his journey. He eventually ends up working for the local mafia earning respect and love of its crime lord Khader.
Roberts tells his story in a way that could not be more entertaining but to me, it was as much of enjoyment as it was a disappointment. There is no depth in these knotty plots and larger than life characters. Soon the book will become nothing more than a few highlighted quotations. But I have to agree, it’s quite a story.
